The 2005 Season saw the captaincy shared between Chris Barlow and Chris Morgan. The side finished in seventh place in the league. The first 4 games saw only one victory against Morpeth but all of the games could just as easily have been won. An eight run defeat to Newcastle started the season, followed by a 90 run victory over Morpeth with Charles Scott 70 and Carl Bevan 53* putting on a partnership of 150 before the 1 st wicket fell off the last ball of the innings. South Northumberland then won a tight game by five wickets in the final over before the best individual performance of the season at Benwell Hill. Andy Denyer returned figures of 6-28 only to watch us fall 2 runs short of handing Benwell Hill their only defeat of the season.
Victories over Benwell & Walbottle, with Ian Cooke in a new role opening the batting scoring an unbeaten 47, Ashington and Morpeth completed the season, while 6 further defeats were added to the record with only Richard Jackson’s 58 at the County Ground against Newcastle and junior Luke Johnson’s 3-19 against Backworth standing out. The season also saw a brief return to playing action by John Kirton and the annual return of Ron Fairweather from France to turn his arm over (along with the inevitable wickets!)
Neither of us is standing for the 2006 season so we hope our replacement enjoys his new role.
